RC Status Check

You get one of four verdicts

The verdict sits at the top of the report in large type, with the registry's own status value printed underneath exactly as recorded. The full RC record follows below it as proof.

If the registry returns a status outside these four, the report says so, prints the value as received, and suggests re-running the check or taking the Full Report.

Why an RC gets cancelled or suspended

A seller can hand you a clean-looking RC card while the registry behind it reads suspended or cancelled. The card does not update itself. Only the VAHAN record does.

• Road tax not paid Tax is due periodically for private vehicles in some states and quarterly or yearly for commercial ones. A long gap can lead the RTO to suspend the registration until the dues are cleared.
• Fitness certificate lapsed Commercial vehicles, and older private vehicles, need a valid fitness certificate. Running without one for long enough attracts suspension.
• Permit lapsed or misused A taxi, bus or goods vehicle whose permit expired, or that was caught plying outside its permit, can have the RC suspended by the RTO.
• Court or police order A vehicle tied to a case, an accident with pending liability, or a seizure order can be suspended or cancelled on the record until the matter is closed.
• Scrapped or end-of-life Once a vehicle is scrapped at a registered facility, or crosses the age limit in a state that enforces one, the RTO cancels the registration. Some of these vehicles are still offered for sale.
• Re-registered elsewhere After a permanent transfer to another state, the old registration is cancelled. A vehicle sold on the old number cannot be transferred.
• Duplicate or fraudulent registration Forged papers, a tampered chassis or engine number, or the same vehicle registered twice lead to cancellation once found.

How it works

If the RC is suspended or cancelled

Only the registering RTO can restore a registration. The usual path is:

1. Find the cause. The document validity tiles on your report usually show it: lapsed tax, fitness or permit. Otherwise ask the seller for the RTO order.
2. Settle it: pay the tax or fees with any penalty, renew the fitness certificate or permit, or close the police or court matter and collect the release.
3. Apply to the registering RTO with the proof and ask for the RC to be restored. A cancelled registration after scrapping or re-registration elsewhere cannot be restored.
4. Run the check again once the RTO confirms. The status should read active before any money changes hands.

As a buyer, the safe rule is simple: let the seller do this before you pay anything. A price cut is not worth a car you cannot transfer.
