On Thursday 15 October 2026, Mahindra launched the XUV 3XO CNG, badged ZNG in some reports, at Rs. 9.99 Lakh ex-showroom. Test drives began the same day; bookings and deliveries open on 20 October. It is the first factory-fitted CNG option on the XUV 3XO and it lands in a market where CNG has already overtaken diesel in passenger car sales. For anyone shopping a used Nexon iCNG, Brezza CNG or Punch iCNG this festive season, the launch sets a hard ceiling on what a used CNG compact SUV can reasonably cost, and it draws in buyers who have never checked a CNG car's paperwork before. This article covers the launch facts, what they do to used prices, and the one registration-record check that separates a factory CNG car from a petrol car wearing a kit.

What Mahindra Launched on 15 October

The XUV 3XO CNG uses the 1.2-litre turbo-petrol engine already in the petrol car, paired with a factory CNG system. Autocar India reports 111 hp and 200 Nm in both petrol and CNG modes, which Mahindra attributes to a recalibrated turbocharger and ECU mapping; some outlets round the output to 110 hp. Holding the same torque on gas is unusual in this class and is the headline engineering claim. The gearbox is a six-speed manual only; no automatic has been announced. Mahindra claims 24.7 km/kg on CNG. The CNG is stored in two cylinders, which Mahindra says is what lets the car keep a 270-litre boot, with the spare wheel moved under the body. Mahindra has not published the capacity of each cylinder, and the figures in circulation come from a single unconfirmed report, so we are not quoting one.

Four variants are on sale. Prices below are ex-showroom as reported by Autocar India and Carlelo; on-road prices will differ by state once road tax and insurance are added.

Key dates15 and 20 October 2026Launch and test drives from 15 October; bookings and deliveries from 20 October

The timing is not accidental. Business Today framed the price reveal around what buyers need to know before bookings open, and the 20 October date drops the car into the middle of the Diwali buying window. Mahindra had no factory CNG option in this segment until now, while Tata has sold the Nexon iCNG with a twin-cylinder setup since 2024 and Maruti has sold the Brezza CNG for longer. The XUV 3XO CNG goes straight at both.

Where the rivals sit, on new prices: the Tata Nexon iCNG starts at about Rs. 8.30 Lakh ex-showroom according to current listings, and the 2026 Maruti Brezza CNG runs from about Rs. 9.35 Lakh for the LXi to Rs. 11.55 Lakh for the ZXi after the August 2026 revision reported by Autocar India. The Tata Punch iCNG, a size smaller, spans about Rs. 6.80 Lakh to Rs. 10.67 Lakh after its July 2026 price hike, as reported by Carlelo. The XUV 3XO CNG therefore opens above the Nexon and Brezza entry prices but matches them on the mid variants, and brings the turbo-petrol torque the others do not have.

Why a Rs. 9.99 Lakh Factory CNG SUV Reprices the Used Market

Used car prices are anchored to the cost of the nearest new alternative. Until last week, a buyer who wanted a compact SUV on CNG with a factory warranty had two mainstream choices. Now there are three, and the new one carries the most power. That matters to the owner of a 2023 Nexon iCNG or a 2024 Brezza CNG who was hoping the festive demand would hold their asking price up. A buyer with Rs. 10 Lakh to spend can now have a brand-new CNG compact SUV with a full warranty, a fresh cylinder and 200 Nm on gas. A used car has to beat that on price by enough to pay for its age, its kilometres and the cylinder hydrotest that is due at three years.

The new reference point for used CNG compact SUVs

We are not going to quote used prices as if they were fixed. They move by city, by month, by owner count and by condition, and a number printed here would be wrong somewhere by next week. What we can say is how the comparison now works. The table sets the new ex-showroom prices against the questions a used alternative has to answer.

OptionPrice positionWhat you get, and what to check
New XUV 3XO CNGRs. 9.99 to 12.27 Lakh ex-showroomFactory CNG, full warranty, new cylinders, 111 hp and 200 Nm on gas, manual only. Waiting period unknown until bookings settle.
New Nexon iCNGFrom about Rs. 8.30 Lakh ex-showroomTwin-cylinder factory CNG since 2024; the lowest entry price of the three factory CNG compact SUVs.
New Brezza CNGAbout Rs. 9.35 to 11.55 Lakh ex-showroomFactory CNG, manual only; CNG-mode output drops to 88 hp and 121.5 Nm per Autocar India.
Used 2023-24 Nexon iCNGIllustrative: must sit well below the new car's on-road price to make senseCheck the fuel type reads PETROL/CNG on the record, cylinder test date, owner count, lender flag. Twin cylinders mean two hydrotests at year three.
Used 2023-24 Brezza CNGIllustrative: same rule; a facelift arrived in 2026, so the old shape is already discountedSame record checks. Confirm it is the factory CNG variant, not a petrol LXi with a kit added later.
Used Punch iCNGCheaper, smaller, a different classWorth considering only if the budget is below the Nexon and Brezza used bands; same paperwork checks apply.

Two points from the table are worth drawing out. First, the old-shape Brezza was already losing ground after the 2026 facelift, which we covered in our note on the old Brezza's resale window; the XUV 3XO CNG shortens that window further. Second, the Nexon iCNG's low entry price makes the new-versus-used gap on a Nexon narrower than most sellers think, and a used Nexon iCNG has to be priced with that in mind.

The running-cost case in October 2026 prices

The reason CNG keeps gaining is simple arithmetic at the pump. CNG crossed a 22% share of car sales in April 2026, and CNG volumes overtook diesel in FY2026, as we reported in CNG surges past diesel. The price per kilogram varies by city and has been moving. Delhi stayed at Rs. 86.98 per kg through October, Pune rose to Rs. 100.50 per kg from 7 October under Torrent Gas, Chennai is about Rs. 97.50 and Bengaluru about Rs. 97, according to the October roundup compiled by Goodreturns and Punekar News. Against petrol prices in the same cities, a car that claims 24.7 km/kg still works out cheaper per kilometre even at Pune's rate, though real-world mileage on any CNG car is lower than the claim once the air conditioner is on. The savings are real; they just do not reach the brochure figure.

Factory CNG or a kit someone bolted on? The record knows.

Enter the registration number. The RC check returns the fuel type, owner count, lender flag and RC status from the VAHAN database. Rs. 99.

Exactly What to Check Before You Pay for a Used CNG Car

The hidden risk in the used CNG market is a petrol car with a retrofit kit being sold as a "CNG car". Many retrofits are perfectly legal: the kit is type-approved, the fitter files the paperwork, the RTO endorses the change, and the fuel type on the registration record changes to PETROL/CNG. The problem is the kit that was never endorsed. The car runs on gas, the owner saves money, and the record still says PETROL. For the buyer, that car is a problem on four fronts: the insurer can reject a claim when the fuel system does not match the policy and the record; the car cannot clear a PUC or fitness check as a CNG vehicle; the RTO can refuse the transfer until the endorsement is done; and the cylinder has no traceable test history. Our tip on retrofit versus factory-fitted CNG explains the endorsement process in detail.

The registration record settles the question in one line. A factory CNG car is registered as PETROL/CNG from day one. A properly endorsed retrofit also reads PETROL/CNG. Only an unendorsed kit leaves the record on PETROL while the car runs on gas. That is why the RC check comes before the test drive, not after.

The four-step sequence

  1. Run the RC check on the registration number. The Vahan Verify RC check on VahanBazaar.in costs Rs. 99 and returns the fuel type, registration date, owner count, lender flag and RC status from the VAHAN database. If the fuel type reads PETROL on a car advertised as CNG, stop. Either the seller endorses the kit before the sale or the price must drop to reflect a job you will have to do yourself.
  2. Match the variant to the record. A factory Nexon iCNG or Brezza CNG is a specific variant. Check that the variant on the record, the badging on the car and the seller's description all agree. A petrol LXi with a later kit is a different car from a factory LXi CNG, even if both show PETROL/CNG after endorsement.
  3. Ask for the cylinder test certificate. CNG cylinders need a hydrotest every three years. A 2023 car is due now; a 2024 car is due next year. Twin-cylinder cars have two cylinders to test. Our guide to the CNG cylinder hydrotest covers what the certificate looks like and what it costs. No certificate on a car past three years means the cost is yours.
  4. Price it against the new car, on-road. Take the XUV 3XO CNG, Nexon iCNG or Brezza CNG on-road price in your city and ask whether the used car's discount covers its age, kilometres, the pending hydrotest and the loss of warranty. If it does not, the new car is the better deal, and the seller needs to hear that.

Which check for which deal: the RC check at Rs. 99 answers the CNG question, the owner count and whether a lender's name is still on the record. If you also want pending e-challans against the number in the same report, the full report at Rs. 149 adds the challan check. Both read the VAHAN database on the number you enter and both are available before you have spoken to the seller.

Our longer explainer on buying a used CNG car walks through the endorsement paperwork and the cylinder test in more depth, including what to do when the seller says the endorsement is "in process".

For Sellers: List Before the CNG Wave Reaches Resale

If you own a petrol compact SUV, or a CNG one that is now two or three years old, the XUV 3XO CNG launch is a reason to act rather than wait. Every new factory CNG model that lands pulls a few more buyers away from used petrol cars and resets the ceiling on used CNG prices. The festive season is the last stretch of strong demand before the year-end slowdown, and a car listed now meets buyers who have budgets approved and a date in mind. A car listed in January meets buyers who have just seen the new CNG SUVs in their neighbours' driveways.

If your CNG car is a factory variant, say so and let the record prove it. If it carries an endorsed retrofit, have the endorsement and the cylinder test certificate ready, because every serious buyer who reads this article will ask for both. If the kit was never endorsed, get that done before you list; it is cheaper for you than the discount a buyer will demand to do it themselves. A verified listing on VahanBazaar costs Rs. 99 and is built from the registration record on your number, so the fuel type and ownership details come from the record rather than from a form you typed, which is exactly what a CNG buyer wants to see.

Pune and Delhi sellers, note the gas price split: with Pune CNG at Rs. 100.50 per kg and Delhi at Rs. 86.98, the running-cost argument for a used CNG car is stronger in Delhi than in Pune right now. Price accordingly and lead with the mileage in markets where the gas is cheap. A look at what is already listed among used cars in Pune shows where comparable CNG cars are sitting before you set your own number.

What This Means for Used Car Buyers

The XUV 3XO CNG does not make a used Nexon iCNG or Brezza CNG a bad buy. It makes an overpriced one obvious. A new factory CNG compact SUV at Rs. 9.99 Lakh ex-showroom is the number every used CNG listing in this class is now measured against, and a seller who has not adjusted to it will be told so by the market within weeks. For the buyer, the opportunity is a better-priced used car; the risk is the one that has always been there in the CNG market, a kit that is not on the record. The registration record tells you in one field which car you are looking at, and it costs Rs. 99 to read it before anyone has your money. Check it, then negotiate against the new car's on-road price, and the saving will be a real one.

Check the Fuel Type on the Record Before You Pay

A used CNG car is only as good as its endorsement. The RC check returns the fuel type, owner count, lender flag and RC status on any registration number for Rs. 99; the full report at Rs. 149 adds pending challans.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does the Mahindra XUV 3XO CNG cost and when can I book it?+

Mahindra launched the XUV 3XO CNG on 15 October 2026 at Rs. 9.99 Lakh ex-showroom for the MX Edge. The REVX Edge (O) is Rs. 10.79 Lakh, the AX5 Rs. 11.19 Lakh and the REVX A Rs. 12.27 Lakh, all ex-showroom. Test drives began on 15 October, and bookings and deliveries open on 20 October 2026. It is sold with a six-speed manual gearbox only, according to Autocar India.

Is a used Nexon CNG or Brezza CNG still worth buying after this launch?+

Yes, if the price reflects the new reference point. A factory CNG compact SUV now starts at Rs. 9.99 Lakh ex-showroom, so a two or three year old Nexon iCNG or Brezza CNG has to be priced well below that to make sense once you add the age, kilometres and the hydrotest that is due on a cylinder older than three years. The saving is real; the condition and the paperwork are what you have to confirm.

How do I know if a used CNG car has a factory kit or a retrofit?+

Look at the fuel type in the registration record. The VAHAN database records an endorsed CNG car, factory-fitted or a properly registered retrofit, as PETROL/CNG. A car that runs on CNG but whose record still says PETROL has an unendorsed kit. The Vahan Verify RC check on VahanBazaar.in costs Rs. 99 and returns the fuel type, owner count and lender flag on the registration number before you pay a token.

Why does an unendorsed CNG kit matter if the car runs fine?+

Because the paperwork, not the engine, is what fails. An unendorsed kit can void an insurance claim, the car will not clear its PUC or fitness check as a CNG vehicle, and the RTO can refuse the transfer until the kit is endorsed on the RC. Getting a retrofit endorsed later costs the buyer time and money, so the price must reflect it or the car should be passed over.
