- Adjacent panels against each other. Work along the car across every shut line. Original paint carries across a shut with only a small step, so a sharp jump at one join is the boundary of the repair.
- The same panel on the opposite side. The cleanest control you will get, because the two doors, wings and quarter panels left the plant under the same process on the same day. If the left front door reads 120 and the right reads 210, batch variation does not cover that.

Panel Gaps, Torque and Weld Lines
Paint depth is the first tell, and the one a good body shop works hardest to get right. Three things a competent shop cannot fully hide: paint-depth inconsistency across adjacent panels, how panel gaps behave under torque, and chassis-rail weld lines visible from underneath.
Start with the gaps. Uneven gaps between doors, bonnet and boot lid indicate panels that have been removed and refitted, a common signature of collision repair. Look along each gap rather than at it, and ask whether it stays the same width end to end. How to Get Photographs Worth Reading
None of that evidence survives a badly taken photograph, so the request matters as much as the read. Four conditions decide whether a picture of a panel can be judged at all, and all four are easy to ask for.
Daylight, and a dry car. A film of water is the most effective paint concealer there is. The standard lens, not the ultra-wide. Phone ultra-wide cameras bend straight lines towards the edges of the frame, destroying any reading of panel gaps and body geometry.
