On 1 October 2026, Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles published its sales for the July to September quarter: 2,01,723 vehicles, up 40% on the same quarter last year and the most it has ever sold in three months. The figure inside that number that matters to a used-car seller is the fuel split. Electric vehicles alone were 47,150 units, up 90%, and EVs plus CNG together were 51% of everything Tata sold. Two years ago a used Nexon EV or Punch CNG was a niche listing. Today it is what a large and growing group of buyers is actively searching for, and with Dhanteras on Friday 6 November and new-car prices higher than they were in August, this is the fortnight to put yours in front of them.
What Tata Reported for July to September 2026
The release, covered on 1 October by Autocar Professional, Free Press Journal, NewsBytes and PSU Connect, is a volume story from top to bottom. Total passenger vehicle sales, including the international business, were 2,01,723 against 1,44,397 in the same quarter of 2025. Domestic sales were 1,96,674, up 40% from 1,40,189. The international business sold 5,049 units, up 20%. Both the EV and CNG lines posted their highest-ever quarters: EVs at 47,150 units against 24,855 a year earlier, and CNG at roughly 28% of the quarter's volume, with EVs at about 23%. Put together, 51 of every 100 Tata cars sold in the quarter were electric or ran on CNG.
| Measure | Q2 FY27 (Jul-Sep 2026) | Q2 FY26 (Jul-Sep 2025) | Change |
|---|---|---|---|
| Total passenger vehicles | 2,01,723 | 1,44,397 | Up 40%, highest-ever quarter |
| Domestic sales | 1,96,674 | 1,40,189 | Up 40% |
| International business | 5,049 | Not stated | Up 20% |
| Electric vehicles | 47,150 | 24,855 | Up 90%, highest-ever quarter |
| EV share of sales | About 23% | About 17% | Industry EV share about 8% |
| CNG share of sales | About 28% | — | Highest-ever CNG quarter |
| EV + CNG share | 51% | — | More than half of volume |
The "highest-ever" descriptions are the company's own, and we quote them as such. The quarter included the full festive build-up and the tax changes of late September, so the comparison with 2025 is not apples to apples. None of that changes the point for a private seller: a very large number of households chose a Tata in the last three months, and half of them chose an electric or CNG one.
Two Things a Record Quarter Does for a Used Tata Owner
New-car demand and used-car demand for the same brand move together, but in this case the link is stronger than usual, for two separate reasons.
1. The exchange route pays wholesale; a private listing captures the retail gap
A meaningful share of those 2 Lakh buyers did not arrive at the showroom on foot. They drove in, in an older Tata or a rival hatchback, and many of them took the exchange offer. Exchange is convenient and there is nothing wrong with it, but the number on the exchange slip is a wholesale number: the dealer or its exchange partner must recondition the car, hold it, and resell it at a margin, and all of that comes out of what they can pay you. A private sale to an end buyer typically closes nearer the retail price. We make no claim about the size of that gap because it varies by model, age and city, but for a car worth several Lakh it is rarely trivial. The sensible approach is the one we set out when the Bayon launch had owners weighing exchange against a private sale: take the exchange quote, then check what comparable private listings are asking on the used Tata pages, and decide with both numbers in hand.
2. EV and CNG buyers now exist in numbers, and some of them will buy used
This is the bigger shift. In 2024 the pool of people who had decided they wanted an electric or CNG car and had settled on a Tata was small. Now it is more than 1 Lakh households a quarter. Three things push a slice of that pool towards a two or three year old used example rather than a new one. First, price: Tata raised prices by up to Rs. 25,000 across petrol, diesel and electric models from 1 September 2026, reported by Free Press Journal and Telangana Today, after a smaller increase in July. Second, timing: a buyer who wants to drive home before Dhanteras on 6 November or Diwali on 8 November may not get a delivery slot. Third, depreciation: a used EV absorbs the first-owner price drop, so a 2023 or 2024 Nexon EV offers most of the car for a clearly lower outlay. We covered the September increase and its effect on resale in Tata's September price hike and what it means for used Tata EV values.
Know what you are pricing against. Dealer offers reported in October put festive benefits of up to Rs. 75,000 on a new petrol Nexon, up to Rs. 1.25 Lakh on the Curvv, up to Rs. 45,000 on the Nexon EV, up to Rs. 1.45 Lakh on outgoing Tiago EV and Punch EV stock, up to Rs. 2.75 Lakh on the Harrier EV and up to Rs. 3.35 Lakh on pre-update Curvv EV variants. These vary by city, variant and stock and you should confirm them locally, but your used car is being compared with a new one at the discounted price, not the brochure price. Price with a clear gap below that number and your listing is the easy decision.
Which Used Tatas Are in Demand, and What Buyers Ask For
Every clean Tata will draw interest this fortnight, but the questions a buyer asks differ sharply by fuel type. Have the answers ready before the first call.
| Used Tata | Who Is Buying | What Buyers Ask For |
|---|---|---|
| Nexon EV (2022-2024) | First-time EV buyers priced out of the new Nexon EV or waiting on a slot | Battery size (30 or 40.5 kWh), service-centre battery health report, remaining 8-year battery warranty, home charger included, fast-charging history |
| Tiago EV / Tigor EV | Second-car city buyers, families with a fixed daily commute | Real-world range per charge now, charger and cable condition, single owner, no accident history |
| Punch EV (2024-2025) | Buyers who want a compact SUV shape with an EV running cost | Battery variant, whether lifetime warranty applied to the first owner and what remains, tyre wear |
| Punch CNG / Nexon CNG | Budget-conscious buyers facing higher petrol prices and a dearer new Punch | Factory-fit CNG with the fuel field on the RC reading CNG, cylinder hydro-test date, kit service record, boot space with the twin-cylinder setup |
| Nexon / Punch petrol and diesel | Families upgrading from a hatchback, buyers who want a 5-star rated car | Service history, owner count, no pending challans, variant and features |
The used Nexon buying guide and used Punch buying guide on this site describe exactly what these buyers are told to check. Read them as a seller and you will know every question before it is asked.
How to Price a Used Tata EV
A used petrol car is priced on year, kilometres and condition. A used EV adds one more variable that outweighs the rest: the battery, and what cover remains on it.
Battery warranty: which one does your car carry?
Tata's standard high-voltage battery warranty on the Nexon EV has been widely reported as 8 years or 1.6 Lakh km, whichever comes first, and this type of cover normally stays with the car when it changes hands. Separately, Tata announced a lifetime battery warranty in 2025 on the 45 kWh Nexon EV and the Curvv EV, and the updated Punch EV and Tiago EV launched in 2026 have been reported with lifetime battery cover for the first owner. The important word is first. Reports consistently describe the lifetime cover as applying to the original owner, which means a second owner should expect to fall back on the standard term. We looked at this in detail in why a lifetime EV battery warranty may not transfer to a used buyer. As a seller, do not guess. Read your warranty booklet, state the exact cover in the listing, and be clear about what the buyer will have after transfer. A buyer who finds out at the service centre that the cover is less than advertised will not come back.
Get a battery health report before you list
Book the car into a Tata service centre and ask for a high-voltage battery health check that records the state of health as a percentage. This single document does more for your asking price than any amount of polish. A 2023 Nexon EV showing a healthy state-of-health figure, with the printout attached to the listing, removes the buyer's biggest fear and justifies a price at the top of the range. A car without the report invites the buyer to assume the worst and bid accordingly.
Then adjust for the small things that are not small
- Charger included. The home wall-box or portable charger that came with the car is worth real money to the next owner. State clearly that it is included, photograph it, and mention whether the installation at your home can be moved.
- Charging habits. Mostly slow home charging is a positive; say so. Frequent DC fast charging is not a disqualifier but be honest if asked.
- Service history. EVs need fewer services, which makes each stamp matter more. Have every record, including software updates, in one folder.
- Hypothecation cleared. Most EVs were financed. Close the loan, collect the lender's NOC and signed Form 35, and get the hypothecation removed from the RC before you list. A lender's name still on the record costs you every buyer who needs their own loan. Our guide to Form 35 and online hypothecation termination walks through it.
- Compare like with like. On the used Nexon, used Punch and used Tiago pages, filter to the same year, the same battery or fuel variant and similar kilometres in your city. Price at the market. In the ten days before Dhanteras a fairly priced EV sells; an optimistic one sits past Diwali.
List your used Tata EV or CNG car before Dhanteras
Type your registration number, pay Rs. 99, and your listing goes live with a Verified badge and the RC details drawn from the VAHAN database. Priority placement, no commission.
What to Put in the Listing
The buyer you want is comparing several cars at once on a phone screen. Give them everything they need to shortlist yours without a call.
For every Tata: year and month of registration, variant, owner count, kilometres, service history summary, insurance validity, PUC validity, and a plain statement that the RC is clear of hypothecation. Eight daylight photos: front and rear three-quarter, both sides, dashboard with the odometer showing, rear seats, boot, tyres. Include the number plate in the exterior shots; the listing checks the plate against the registration number you type.
For an EV, add: battery capacity, the state-of-health figure from the service centre with the report date, the exact battery warranty remaining and whether it transfers, charger included or not, and your typical real-world range. Photograph the charging port and the charger.
For a CNG car, add: that the kit is factory fitted, the cylinder's last hydro-test date, and a photo of the RC showing the fuel field as CNG or PETROL/CNG. Buyers have learned to walk away from aftermarket kits that never made it onto the record.
Then list it verified. You type the registration number, pay Rs. 99, and the listing is cross-checked against the VAHAN database, so the buyer sees the registration date, fuel type, owner serial and lender flag from the official record next to your photos. On average, based on VahanBazaar listings data, verified listings get about 3x more enquiries. For a car worth several Lakh, Rs. 99 is the cost of being the listing a serious buyer trusts first, and there is no commission when it sells.
If You Are the Buyer: the VAHAN Checks
The same demand that makes this a good fortnight to sell a used Tata makes it a crowded one to buy. Four fields on the VAHAN record settle most of the risk before you spend a rupee on a token.
- Owner count. The owner serial tells you whether the "single owner" claim is true. A Nexon EV on its third owner in three years deserves a question.
- Hypothecation. If a lender's name appears, the seller has not closed the loan or has not updated the record. Do not pay a token until it is cleared.
- Blacklist and RC status. A blacklisted or suspended RC cannot be transferred cleanly. Walk away whatever the price.
- Fuel type and challans. For a CNG car the fuel field must say so. Pending challans in the seller's name become your problem at transfer time in several states.
Run it before you visit. The Rs. 99 RC check reads the car's VAHAN record and returns registration status, owner serial, registration date, fuel type, lender flag and blacklist flag in a minute. The Full Report at Rs. 149 adds pending challans. Start at Vahan Verify.
What This Means for Used Car Sellers and Buyers
Tata sold 2,01,723 cars in a quarter, 40% more than a year ago, and 51% of them were electric or CNG. New Tata prices went up by as much as Rs. 25,000 on 1 September. Dhanteras is on 6 November and Diwali on 8 November. For the owner of a used Nexon EV, Tiago EV, Punch EV, Tigor EV, Punch CNG or Nexon CNG, those three facts add up to a buyer pool that is large, motivated and short on time, and to a price environment in which a well-documented used car looks like good value.
The sellers who will do best this fortnight are the ones who treat the battery and the paperwork as the product. Get the battery health report, state the warranty honestly, clear the hypothecation, include the charger, price against the discounted new car rather than the brochure, and list it verified for Rs. 99 so the buyer sees the official record next to your photos. Buyers, for their part, should run the Rs. 99 RC check on every shortlisted car and the Rs. 149 Full Report on the one they intend to buy. Both sides end up with the same thing: a transfer that goes through cleanly before the lamps are lit.
This article is general information and not legal or financial advice. Sales figures are as published by Tata Motors and reported by the sources named on 1 October 2026 and may be revised. Battery warranty terms differ by model, variant, year and ownership; confirm them with a Tata service centre before you buy or sell. Dealer offers vary by city and stock. Ownership transfer procedures and fees differ by state; confirm them with your RTO, your insurer and, if the car was financed, your lender.
Half of Tata's Buyers Want an EV or CNG Car. Show Them Yours
A verified listing is cross-checked against the VAHAN database and carries a Verified badge with the RC details buyers want to see. Rs. 99, priority placement, no commission.
Frequently Asked Questions
Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles sold 2,01,723 vehicles in July to September 2026, up 40% on a year earlier and its highest quarter ever. Electric vehicles were 47,150 of those, up 90%, and EVs plus CNG together made up 51% of the quarter's sales. That means a large pool of buyers now actively wants a Tata electric or CNG car. Some of them will find new-car waiting periods or post-hike prices steep and will look at a well-kept two or three year old used example instead, which is good news for a private seller.
It depends on the variant and the year. Tata's standard high-voltage battery warranty on the Nexon EV has been widely reported as 8 years or 1.6 Lakh km, and this normally stays with the car. The lifetime battery warranty announced from 2025 on the 45 kWh Nexon EV and the Curvv EV, and later on the updated Punch EV and Tiago EV, has been reported as applying to the first owner only. As a seller, state exactly which cover your car carries and show the buyer the policy terms; as a buyer, ask the Tata service centre to confirm what will remain after transfer.
Compare cars of the same year, variant and battery size on the used Nexon, Punch and Tiago pages. Then adjust for the remaining battery warranty, a battery health report from the service centre, whether the home charger is included, and the owner count. Dealer offers of up to Rs. 45,000 on a new Nexon EV and up to Rs. 1.45 Lakh on outgoing Tiago EV and Punch EV stock were reported in October, so price your used car with a clear gap below the discounted new price.
Run the Rs. 99 RC check on the registration number before paying a token. It reads the VAHAN record and shows the registration status, owner serial, registration date, fuel type, lender flag and blacklist flag. For a CNG car, confirm the fuel field says CNG or PETROL/CNG so the kit is on the record. The Rs. 149 Full Report adds pending challans.
