Ertiga-specific inspection points. Take your phone to the dealer and use this as a checklist.
AT gearbox slipping or delayed engagement
On 2018-2021 Ertigas with the 4-speed AT, check for delayed engagement when shifting from Park to Drive (more than 2 seconds is a red flag). Also test on an incline — if the car rolls back significantly before the gearbox catches, the torque converter may be worn. AT gearbox overhaul or replacement is extremely expensive. Drive the car in city traffic for at least 15-20 minutes to feel for harsh shifts or slipping.
Repair: ₹40,000-80,000 for torque converter replacement. Full AT rebuild: ₹80,000-1,20,000
White/blue smoke from exhaust on cold start
White or blue smoke on cold start that persists for more than 30 seconds indicates worn valve stem seals or piston ring wear. Common on high-mileage Ertigas (80,000+ km) that were not regularly serviced. Blue smoke means oil is burning in the combustion chamber. This is an engine overhaul territory problem — walk away.
Repair: ₹20,000-35,000 for valve stem seals. ₹40,000-60,000 if piston rings need replacement.
Structural rust on underbody or chassis rails
Check the underbody along the chassis rails, near the spare wheel well, and around the rear suspension mounting points. Surface rust on bolts is normal, but flaking or bubbling rust on structural members is a deal-breaker. Common in coastal cities (Mumbai, Chennai, Kochi) and flood-affected cars. Use a torch and mirror to inspect — or better, get it on a lift.
Repair: ₹20,000+ (structural welding). Often recurring and can compromise crash safety.
Flood-damaged car (hidden water damage)
Ertigas are commonly used in cities prone to flooding (Mumbai, Chennai). Check for musty smell in the cabin, silt deposits under seats and in the spare wheel well, watermarks on seat upholstery, rust on seat rail bolts, and corrosion on electrical connectors under the dashboard. Also check if the car's service history shows a gap during monsoon months — sellers often skip records for flood damage repairs.
Repair: Unpredictable. Electrical gremlins can surface months later. ₹20,000-50,000+
Rear suspension sagging or bottoming out
A loaded Ertiga (5-7 passengers) that scrapes over speed bumps or feels bouncy on the rear has worn rear shock absorbers or springs. This is common after 50,000-60,000 km, especially on cars frequently used with full occupancy. Test by pressing down firmly on the rear bumper and releasing — the car should bounce once and settle. Multiple bounces = worn shocks.
Repair: ₹6,000-10,000 for rear shock absorbers (pair). ₹8,000-12,000 if springs also need replacement.
AC not cooling 3rd row adequately
A common complaint even on well-maintained Ertigas — the AC struggles to cool the 3rd row, especially in peak summer. Check if the rear AC vents blow cold air with the fan on max. If the front AC is cold but rear vents blow warm air, the expansion valve or rear evaporator may be faulty. On some units, the issue is simply blocked rear AC ducts under the trim panels.
Repair: ₹1,500-3,000 for duct cleaning/gas top-up. ₹8,000-15,000 for expansion valve or evaporator replacement.
Steering wheel vibration at 80-100 km/h
Vibration through the steering at highway speeds usually indicates unbalanced wheels or worn front suspension bushings. On Ertigas this is common after 40,000 km. Get a wheel alignment and balancing done (₹800-1,200) — if vibration persists, the lower arm bushings or tie rod ends need replacement.
Repair: ₹800-1,200 for wheel balancing. ₹3,000-6,000 for suspension bush replacement.
Paint quality issues (fading/peeling on roof and bonnet)
Ertigas in darker colours (grey, brown, blue) are prone to paint fading on horizontal surfaces after 4-5 years of outdoor parking. White and silver hold up much better. Check the roof and bonnet carefully — if you see chalking or clear coat peeling, the car needs repainting.
Repair: ₹4,000-6,000 per panel. Full repaint for roof + bonnet: ₹12,000-18,000.
Infotainment system lag/crashes
The SmartPlay system on 2018-2021 models is known to lag, freeze, or lose Bluetooth connectivity. This is a software issue — a firmware update at Maruti costs ₹500-1,000. On 2022+ models, the SmartPlay Pro system is more stable. Not a mechanical concern, but good for negotiation.
Repair: ₹500-1,000 for software update. ₹8,000-12,000 if the head unit needs replacement.
3rd row seat cushion wear/flattening
The 3rd row seat cushion loses firmness after 40,000-50,000 km of regular use. This is expected — the seat foam is thinner than the first two rows. Seat re-padding costs ₹2,000-3,000 if it bothers you. Many owners simply add a cushion.
Minor interior rattles from dashboard/door panels
Dashboard and door panel rattles develop after 50,000+ km, particularly over rough roads. This is typical of Maruti's cost-effective build — clips and fasteners loosen over time. A Maruti service center can re-secure clips in 30-45 minutes.
Headlight lens yellowing (2018-2021)
Halogen headlight lenses on the pre-facelift model tend to yellow or haze after 3-4 years. Reduces light output by about 20%. Headlight restoration polishing costs ₹500-800 per side and restores clarity.
Minor brake disc scoring
Light grooves on brake disc surfaces are normal after 30,000+ km. Only a concern if grooves are deep enough to catch your fingernail, or if you feel vibration when braking. Disc replacement: ₹2,000-3,500 per disc.
Sliding door channel wear (2nd row)
The 2nd row sliding function (fold-and-tumble) can feel stiff after 50,000+ km. This is normal wear on the seat rail mechanism. Lubrication during regular service resolves it. Not a sign of any structural issue.
