Nobody buys a used pickup because they like the way it drives. They buy it because it is supposed to pay for itself — a tool bought to make a living, judged on what it earns against what it costs to keep on the road. That changes what a pre-purchase check has to deliver. A private car buyer wants to know the car is honest. A goods vehicle buyer wants to know the vehicle is honest and what the next six months of downtime and repair bills are likely to look like, because every day the vehicle is in a workshop is a day it earns nothing. The paperwork answers the first question completely and the second one not at all. This article is about the second question, and about how much of it can be answered from a set of photographs before you spend a day travelling to another district to look at a vehicle in person.
Papers Say It Can Earn. Condition Says What It Will Cost to Keep Earning.
The record side of a used commercial vehicle purchase is well covered and genuinely important. Before money moves you want the permit position, the fitness position and the hypothecation position confirmed against the official record, because any one of them can stop the vehicle working the week after you buy it. Read that piece, do what it says, and treat this one as the other half of the same purchase.
What matters for the moment is what those records can and cannot tell you. A permit in order, a fitness certificate in date and a clean hypothecation entry together prove one thing: that the vehicle is legally entitled to go out tomorrow and carry goods for money. That is a real and necessary assurance, and a vehicle that fails it is not a bargain at any price, because an operator who cannot legally put a vehicle to work owns an expensive ornament.
But legal entitlement is not commercial capability. A vehicle with immaculate papers can have a chassis that was straightened after a heavy knock, a rear axle that no longer sits square, leaf packs that have been re-arched twice, and a clutch with more hours on it than the odometer suggests is possible. None of that appears on a record. None of it stops the vehicle being legal. All of it decides what you spend in the first year — and on an asset bought to earn, that is the number that determines whether the purchase was a good one.
Two different questions, two different answers. The record read asks: can this vehicle legally work? The condition read asks: for how long, and at what running cost? A buyer who does only the first is protected against a legal trap and completely exposed to a mechanical one. A buyer who does only the second may buy a sound vehicle that cannot be put to work. Commercial buyers need both, in that order, because there is no point inspecting a vehicle you would not be allowed to operate.
Where a Worked LCV Wears Differently From a Private Car
A private car spends most of its life carrying one or two people and a bag. A light commercial vehicle spends its life carrying as much as the operator can persuade it to carry, over whatever surface the delivery is on, often on a schedule that leaves no room for a workshop visit. The result is that wear concentrates in places a private-car inspection would never think to look, and that the parts a car buyer obsesses over — paint finish, upholstery, boot trim — carry almost no information about a goods vehicle at all. Here is where to point the camera instead.
The load bed and its floor
The load bed is the part of a goods vehicle that actually does the work, and it is the most honest surface on the whole vehicle because nobody bothers to prettify it. Look for dents punched into the floor from loads dropped rather than lowered, and note where they cluster — damage concentrated at the tailgate end suggests loading by hand and by throw, which tells you something about how the rest of the vehicle has been treated. Look along the bed for rippling or waviness in the floor panels, and for cracking where the floor meets the side panels, both of which point at sustained loading beyond what the bed was designed to take.
Rust deserves separate attention, and the place to find it is wherever water pools. Bed corners, the seams where the floor meets the sides, and the area around the tailgate hinges are where standing water sits after rain or after a wash, and corrosion there is structural rather than cosmetic because those are the points the bed is held together at. Finally, look hard at the tie-down points. Torn, bent or elongated tie-down eyes tell you loads have been strapped down hard and moved anyway. Tie-down points that have been cut off and re-welded tell you the same story with an extra chapter — something failed and was repaired, and the repair is rarely as strong as the original.
The chassis rails and cross-members
This is the single most important structural read on a goods vehicle, and if you take only one thing from this article, take this. A ladder-frame commercial vehicle carries its load through the chassis rails; the body, the cab and the suspension all hang off them. A rail that has been bent and straightened, or heated to be straightened, never recovers its original properties, and a frame that is even slightly out of true quietly destroys tyre life, alignment and suspension geometry for the rest of the vehicle's working life.
Sight along each rail from both ends and both sides. You are looking for ripple — a gentle waviness in what should be a dead-straight web — and for kinks, which tend to appear near the spring hangers and near the point where the body meets the frame. Then look at the surface treatment. Factory underseal and paint are uniform along the whole rail. A section of fresh underseal, fresh paint or fresh grime-free metal in the middle of an otherwise weathered rail is somebody covering something, and it is worth asking what. Finally, read the welds. Factory welds on a chassis are consistent in spacing and profile; repair welds are not. Weld spatter, grinding marks, and beads that look different from the ones at the other end of the same rail are all evidence that somebody has been working on the frame.
A repaired chassis is the one defect that should end the conversation. Almost everything else on a goods vehicle is a price negotiation — springs can be replaced, a bed can be re-floored, tyres are a known cost. A frame that has been straightened is a permanent condition that you inherit, that gets worse under load, and that no subsequent repair fully corrects. If the photographs raise a chassis question, resolve it before you travel, not after.
Suspension and the signature of overloading
Overloading is routine in this segment, and it is worth being honest about that rather than pretending otherwise. Operators load to the job, not to the plate, and the suspension is where that habit leaves its fingerprints. Start with the leaf packs. A spring pack that has gone flat, or reversed its arch so it curves the wrong way, has been worked well beyond its design. A pack that has clearly been re-arched — the leaves look newer than the hangers, or the arch is sharper than the pack on the other side — has been through that cycle already. Added leaves are the clearest signal of all: a pack with more leaves than the factory fitted has been deliberately stiffened so the vehicle can carry more, and everything upstream of those springs has been carrying more too.
Then look at the dampers. Shock absorbers on a worked LCV are consumables, and a blown or weeping damper is a cheap fix — but a vehicle with one new damper and three original ones tells you repairs are being done reactively, one failure at a time, which is a maintenance philosophy you are about to inherit. Last, check that the axle still sits square. Photograph the vehicle from directly behind and directly in front on level ground: an axle that has shifted will show as a wheel sitting visibly further forward in its arch than the one on the other side. That is usually a broken centre bolt or a worn hanger, and it eats tyres. The cab and the controls
The cab is where hours worked become visible, and it is the part of the vehicle sellers most often forget to tidy. Worn pedal rubbers are the classic tell: a brake or clutch pedal rubber worn through to the metal, or worn unevenly to one side, records thousands of operations that no one can undo. A steering wheel rim polished smooth and darkened where hands sit, with the texture still intact on the underside, is the same evidence from a different angle. A gear lever with noticeable slack in it, or a gaiter that has split and been taped, says the linkage has done real work.
Take the driver's seat seriously as well. A collapsed outer bolster on the driver's side means a great many entries and exits, which on a delivery vehicle means a great many drops. Sagging headlining, a cracked dash top and a horn button worn shiny all add to the same picture. The point of reading the cab is not that any one of these items costs money to fix — they do not. The point is that they are a usage record that nobody edits, and when they disagree with the odometer, they are the more reliable witness.
Tyres, and what a mismatched set means
On a goods vehicle, tyres are both a large running cost and a diagnostic instrument. Start with matching. Different brands or different sizes across the same axle is a maintenance shortcut that also changes how load is shared between the two wheels, and it is a reliable sign that the vehicle has been kept running on whatever was cheapest and available rather than on a plan. Then read the wear pattern. Wear concentrated on one shoulder points at alignment that has drifted or at a bent component; wear on both shoulders with the centre intact points at persistent underinflation or at loads the tyre was not rated for. Even wear across the face is what you want to see and is worth noticing when you do.
Sidewalls are the safety read. Cuts, gouges and bulges from kerbing are common on urban delivery vehicles because the job involves mounting kerbs, and a bulge in a sidewall is a structural failure of the tyre that no amount of tread depth compensates for. Ask for the spare in the same detail as the others: a spare that is bald, flat, or a different size from everything else on the vehicle tells you the operator has been running without a usable fallback, which is its own comment on how the vehicle has been looked after.

Why the Odometer Is Even Weaker Evidence Here Than on a Car
Every used vehicle buyer knows to be cautious about the odometer. On a goods vehicle, the caution has to go further, because even a perfectly honest reading tells you much less than it does on a private car. The reason is simple: distance is a poor proxy for work. What ages a commercial vehicle is hours — hours of engine running, hours of clutch slipping, hours of the suspension cycling under load, hours of the brakes being used hard in traffic. Distance and hours correlate on a highway vehicle. On an urban one they barely correlate at all.
Think about what a short-radius delivery vehicle actually does in a day. It starts and stops constantly. It idles at loading points, at gates, in traffic. It does its work in low gears with the clutch doing a great deal of the talking. It covers a modest distance and accumulates an enormous amount of engine, transmission and brake use doing it. Two vehicles of the same age and the same reading — one that ran long inter-district trips, one that did city deliveries — are not the same vehicle, and the more heavily worked of the two will frequently be the one with the lower number on the dial.
That is before you consider deliberate tampering, which is a live risk on commercial vehicles for the obvious reason that the reading affects resale value directly. On a goods vehicle the stakes are higher because you are pricing future earnings against future repairs, and both of those depend on how hard the vehicle has actually been run.
The practical response is to stop treating the odometer as a headline figure and start treating it as one claim among several. Read the wear evidence first — pedals, wheel, lever, seat, bed — form a view of how hard the vehicle has worked, and then see whether the odometer agrees with it. When they agree, you have corroboration. When they disagree, believe the wear. It is the part of the vehicle nobody can reset, and it is the reason a photograph of a pedal rubber is worth more on a commercial vehicle than a photograph of the instrument cluster.
What the Photo Read Catches, and What It Cannot
Being clear about the limits is the only way this is useful. A photo-based condition read is strong on exactly the things that leave visual evidence, and it is blind to the things that do not. On a goods vehicle, fortunately, a large share of the expensive problems are visual: structural repair, corrosion at the load-bearing seams, spring packs that have been modified, dampers that are weeping, tyres that are mismatched or damaged, panel and bed damage that has been patched, and cab wear that contradicts the claimed usage. Those are all things an AI engine reading a properly taken set of photographs will flag, and things a buyer scrolling a listing on a phone routinely misses. What it cannot do is equally definite, and we would rather say it plainly. It cannot road-test the vehicle, and certainly not under load, which is the only condition in which a commercial vehicle's real behaviour appears. It cannot hear the engine, so it will not catch a knock, a whine from the differential, or a turbo that is on its way out. It cannot measure brake performance, and brakes on a loaded goods vehicle are the component you would most like measured. It cannot get underneath and shake a component to feel for play, and it cannot smell a clutch. Any tool that claims to do those things from photographs is overclaiming.
The honest framing is a filter, not a verdict. Most used LCVs are bought remotely — from a fleet operator or a dealer in another district, on the strength of a few photographs and a phone call. The cost of travelling to inspect every candidate in person is the real constraint on how many vehicles a buyer can consider. A photo read changes that arithmetic: it removes the vehicles with visible structural or repair evidence before you spend a day on them, and it hands you a specific list of things to look at on the one vehicle you do travel to see. It makes the physical inspection better; it does not replace it.
That is also why the sequencing matters. Run the record check first, because a vehicle that cannot be legally operated is not worth inspecting. Run the photo read second, on the shortlist that survives. Travel to see the one or two that survive both, and use the report as your checklist when you get there. Running the Two Reads Together on an LCV

Run in that order they compound, because each narrows the field for the next. A vehicle that clears the record check and then shows chassis or spring evidence in the photo read has been eliminated for Rs 249 rather than for the cost of a day's travel and a deposit. A vehicle that clears both is one you can go and see with a specific list in your hand. The challan check earns its place on a commercial vehicle. Outstanding challans on a goods vehicle are not just a bill to be settled — they increasingly sit in the way of the transactions you need to complete after the purchase. The Photographs to Ask a Commercial Seller For
A photo read is only as good as the photographs. Commercial sellers — fleet operators, dealers, owner-drivers — are generally used to being asked, and most will send a proper set without complaint. Ask for them in daylight, with the vehicle unladen, parked on level ground, and with the bed swept. Then ask for these.
- The load bed from directly above. Standing on the tailgate or from a height, framing the whole floor in one shot. This is the single most informative photograph on a goods vehicle and it is the one sellers least often think to take.
- The load bed from each of the four corners. Low and along the floor, so ripple and waviness show as shadow rather than disappearing into a flat overhead view. Four photographs, one per corner.
- The chassis rails along their full length, from both sides. Crouched, sighting along the rail. If the vehicle can be photographed over a pit or on a ramp, better still. This is where a repair hides and where you most want a clear image.
- Each leaf spring pack, square-on. All four, individually, from the side so the arch of the pack is visible. Count the leaves in the photograph and compare left against right.
- Every tyre, including the spare, with tread face and sidewall both visible. Two angles per tyre if the seller is willing. Ask for the spare out of its carrier rather than photographed in place.
- The full cab interior, with pedals and gear lever in frame. One wide shot from the passenger door, and a close-up of the pedal rubbers. This is your usage cross-check against the odometer.
- The engine bay with the bonnet fully open. Wide enough to show the whole bay, taken without wiping anything down first — a bay that has just been steam-cleaned hides leaks and is worth asking about.
- A clear close-up of the chassis plate. Readable, in focus, not at an angle. It ties the physical vehicle to the record you checked, and a plate that is damaged, repainted or awkward to photograph is a question in itself.
How the seller responds to that list is information in its own right. An operator who knows the vehicle will send the photographs and often add context you did not ask for — when the springs were replaced, which tyre is newest, what the bed damage came from. A seller who returns three attractive three-quarter shots from twenty feet away, or who explains why the chassis cannot be photographed today, has answered a different question than the one you asked. You can decide what to do with that before spending anything at all.
Ask for the fitness and permit documents in the same message. It costs nothing to request the paperwork photographs alongside the condition photographs, and it lets you run the record read and the photo read in parallel rather than in sequence. What This Means for Used Commercial Vehicle Buyers
The habit worth building is to stop thinking of a used goods vehicle purchase as one decision and start thinking of it as two. The first decision is legal and is settled by the record: permit, fitness, hypothecation, challans, RC status. Get that wrong and the vehicle sits idle regardless of how good it is. The second decision is commercial and is settled by condition: what has this vehicle been through, what has already been repaired, and what is going to need attention in the first year. Get that wrong and the vehicle works, but it works for the workshop rather than for you.
Most buyers in this segment do the first properly and the second by instinct, and that is understandable — the records are checkable from a phone and the condition is not, especially when the vehicle is three districts away. But the instinct is being asked to work on the thinnest possible evidence: a handful of photographs chosen by the seller, taken to flatter. A structured read of those same photographs is a cheap way to make the instinct better informed, and the Rs 249 it costs is a rounding error against a purchase you expect to earn from for years.
Be realistic about what you are buying as well. A used LCV that has worked hard is not automatically a bad buy — worked is what they are for, and a well-maintained vehicle that has done real work is usually a better prospect than a neglected one that has not. What you are looking for is not an unworked vehicle but an honestly represented one: wear that matches the story, repairs that were done rather than hidden, and a frame that has never needed straightening. Price the rest in. Springs, dampers, tyres and a bed repair are all known quantities that belong in the negotiation, not reasons to walk away.
And run the record check first, every time. It is the cheapest step, it takes a minute, and it stops you spending anything further on a vehicle that was never going to be allowed to work for you. Rs 49 for the RC record, or Rs 79 with the challan check added, is the correct opening move on any vehicle you intend to earn from — followed by the condition read on the shortlist that survives. A chassis repair is the one defect that should make a buyer walk away regardless of how attractive the price is.
Because distance is a poor proxy for work. A goods vehicle running short urban delivery routes spends most of its day in traffic, loading and idling, so the engine, clutch, gearbox and brakes accumulate enormous hours at a low recorded distance. Two vehicles with the same reading can have led completely different lives. Read wear instead: pedal rubbers, the polish on the steering wheel rim, slack in the gear lever, the state of the seat bolster and the condition of the load bed all record hours worked rather than distance travelled. If those tell a harder story than the odometer does, believe them.
